Despite The Shift Of Terrain, The Life Of A

Legend Remains The Same

Kumudini Hajong. The living legend of the revolution. Defended herself against

British exploitation. At that significant point in time, the tonk movement had

expanded across Kumudini Hajong. The tonk system was abolished in 1950 after a

prolonged battle. The revolutionary offspring of that tumultuous era has gradually

faded away with the passage of time. Only Kumudini Hajong survived as a witness to

the coming.

This majestic man, weakened by the weight of age, has forgotten the memories of the

dreary days of the movement. As he began to speak, he said in a tiresome voice,

‘How could I talk about that war? How come I remember all that? Weight of age got

me, spare me now.

At some point in my discussion, I tried to know about that Tonk movement but it

appears that most of his memories have sunk into the abyss of oblivion. In the

Meanwhile, he reminisced about the golden days of history. The days of struggle and

resistance also came up in his reminiscing.

January 31, 1948. The majority of the village#39;s men and women went to work in the

fields in the mornings of the winter. A detachment of the then Eastern Frontier Rifles

invaded a residence in the village of Bahera Tali, 4 miles north-west of Birishiri, at

around 10 a.m., hunting for Kumudini#39;s husband, Lankeshwar Hajong. The military's

goal was to apprehend Lankeshwar Hajong, a Tonk movement grassroots leader, and

his brothers. Lankeshwar Hajong and his three brothers hid and proceeded to the

shelter of revolutionary leader Comrade Moni Singh upon learning of the approach of

the Eastern Frontier soldiers. Since they were unable to apprehend them, the outraged

armed men proceeded to treat the women of the house with contempt. Lankeshwar

Hajong's newly married wife Kumudini was inquired about his whereabouts at one

point. When Kumudini Hajong said “don’t know”, the soldiers became more enraged.

They tried to take Kumudini Hajong to the Birishiri army camp. Another female

member of the household proceeded to the next house and spread the word that

Kumudini was being taken away in this situation. Hundreds of Hajong men and

women, commanded by Shimoni Hajong, resisted with sticks, machetes, and kitchen

knives as word spread through the Hajong inhabited villages. They were joined by

Dista Moni Hajong and Basanti Hajong, and they were ruthlessly shot by the military

forces while attempting to rescue Kumudini Hajong from the British. Rashimoni

Hajong has knocked death to the ground. This atrocious massacre resulted in the

deaths of Surendra Hajang and numerous others. Other Hajong men and women

became outraged and hurled spears and poles at the armed forces. In their onslaught,

Two Eastern Frontier Rifles soldiers were executed on the spot. The rest of the men

escaped and saved their lives. Rashimoni Hajong's name is engraved in golden letters

throughout history as a peasant woman warrior.

Kumudini Hajong battled Pakistan as well. Bangladesh arose from that kind of

struggle. We now have our own nation. We have a history of not lowering our heads

because of all these legends. Those who worked and fought for independence and

freedom are now deprived of a basic standard of living. The nation and history could

not provide a single cent of development assistance to these makers of the nation.

The defeat of the two rulers' flags, as well as the three-flag state structure, happened

right before her eyes. The red and green flags flutter next to her; she now lives in an

independent Bangladesh, but her life hasn't transformed much. Her constant

companions are diseases, anguish, misery, and despair. Frequently, unbearable

discomfort might just be sensed in the feet and hands. Due to financial constraints, she

is not even able to receive proper treatment. She has had enough of lamenting the

despair. Despite her poverty, she is living a life worthy of a tale.

According to her interview, she lives on a piece of land under the Forest Department.

Her whole life was cut short by hunger and poverty. She gets a minimum monthly

old-age allowance. In this age of 100% electrification, her house does not have an

electricity facility. The land they had to fight for land and paddy was eventually

occupied during the Pakistani rule. Yet she did not bow his head. sHe spent his

my whole life has been struggling.

At some point in her conversation with me, she loudly expressed her agony crying and

said, “There is no land, nothing. All have been evicted. When I cleared the forest and

built this house, the forester came and said, this is forest land. What else was there for

me to say? ” Can the “Developing Nation” hear the words of the misery of a living

legend who dedicated her whole life contributing to liberating the nation?

The sun in the western sky spreads a red glow and tells us to return home. After

concluding the discussion, I said goodbye and came down the slope of his house

towards the flat road, leaving behind an uneven fighting face. Looking back, I saw

this struggling woman waving goodbye as if a lonely woman was standing in a

deserted port and bidding farewell to her shipwrecked relatives.
