Ashikur Rahman
Drugs are one of the major problems in the national life of Bangladesh. Drug addiction is a silent killer. It destroys people bit by bit. Family, society and country are destroyed in its ravages. In the current context, the drug invasion is taking a terrible shape in all parts of the country. A large part of the youth of Bangladesh is immersed in drug addiction. It can be seen that the child who could have brightened the face of the family, involved himself in the development of the society and the country, could have become the pride of the country with his talent and thinking, that child today is not only being destroyed by the touch of drugs, under the influence of drugs, but is destroying the dreams of a family’s desired happiness. The question is what is the drug? A drug is a substance which, when used or applied, reduces the sensitivity of the brain in the human body and causes temporary excitement in the body. Associated with the analgesic action of the drug are drowsiness, euphoria, irritability, depression, respiratory depression, decreased blood pressure, memory loss and vomiting, constipation, etc. According to research, people between 15 and 35 years of age usually become drug addicts, with a rate of 70 percent. On the other hand, the average age of taking drugs is 22 years.
According to experts the following symptoms can be seen in the behavior, habits and behavior of a drug addict. Suddenly starting to hang out with new friends. Frequent demands for money on various pretexts. Return home later than before. Increased tendency to wake up at night and sleep during the day. Always reluctant in studies, sports, cultural activities. It can be definitely suspected that a person is addicted to drugs if there are several things observed such as an increase in bad smell on clothes and burning spots.
The hand which is supposed to be used for any creative work, which is supposed to ensure the field of social development, is now very easily met with the death addiction ‘drug’. Drug addicts and drug dealers are not only destroying society; They are also destroying family peace. Destroying a beautiful happy family. In August 2013, police inspector Mahfuzur Rahman’s yaba-addicted daughter Aishi was killed by her parents together at home with her friends for drug money in Chamelibagh of the capital. There are even worse cases of drug abuse destroying a happy prosperous family. Many “parents” who are fed up with the torture, lawlessness and torture of their drug addict children do not hesitate to take legal recourse and hand over their children to the police to keep them in jail.
The International Day Against Drug Abuse is observed on June 26 every year to create awareness among the public about the dangers of drugs and prevent the spread of drugs. In 1987, the United Nations General Assembly decided to observe the day as the International Anti-Drug Day.
On June 26, 1988, the United Nations declared the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ for the first time worldwide. There are no reliable statistics on the actual number of drug addicts in Bangladesh.
However, according to the data of the Narcotics Control Department, the number of drug addicts in Bangladesh is about 75 lakhs. Of these, 80 percent are between 18 and 30 years old, that is, 4 million young people!
Why are people addicted to drugs? No single factor is responsible for drug addiction. But if the number one reason were to be found, easy access to drugs would be the number one reason. And behind this easy access, there are always active organized mafias who sell it in the market for convenience and self-interest.
According to a sociologist, drug addiction is a side effect of market economy where a group of self-interested people are working in the hope of making black money. Apart from this, there are various socio-economic, political, cultural and psychological reasons behind it.
In post-independence Bangladesh, the complications caused by urbanization and urbanisation, bad influence entering into student-politics, being used as a tool by politicians, rioting in the name of modernity, terrorism, depression, conflict etc. are helping people to become addicted to drugs.
Apart from this, the prejudice of friends, family, social and emotional instability, Bangladesh being used as a transit route for drug trafficking are considered to be one of the reasons for the spread of drug addiction. According to a survey conducted by the World Health Organization, drug abuse is more common among children of wealthy families.
It is a symbol of nobility to the wealthy brokers. They love to get lost in the hypnosis of drugs. They want to enjoy instant pleasure by taking drugs. Biochemical reactions of drugs in the bloodstream give them a kind of warmth. These pulsations, feelings, dreamy drowsiness and wasted pleasure at one time lead them to the extreme stage of addiction.
Among the educated and conscious drug addicts in our country, there are many people who think that taking drugs makes one’s intellect clear, one gets pleasure in work, and as a result, success comes easily. Arguments about the virtues of drugs Family affection, affection, love, lack of compassion, family turmoil above all economic conditions act as catalysts for drug addiction. The effects of drug addiction at the individual, family, community and national levels are dire. Drug addiction creates multifaceted problems in individual, family, social and national life. Drug abuse and illicit trafficking is a complex, multidimensional and international problem.
Drug use and smuggling is consuming the whole world today regardless of country, time, religion, caste, society. No country, rich or poor, developed or developing, is free from the terrible clutches of drugs. The way drug addiction is spreading in our country’s schools, colleges and university students, if we don’t curb it now, it will be very difficult to prevent it in the future.
But what can be done to change it! Moral education should be excelled by including subjects related to human qualities in the curriculum so that the youth can attain real education and become job seekers rather than job seekers.
According to a World Bank survey, about 45 percent of drug addicts are involved in some kind of social crime. Drug addiction is one of the major public health problems. The rate at which drug addiction is increasing in our country is very scary and alarming.
If we do not curb drugs now, in the near future there will be no family in our country where no one is addicted to drugs. Drugs are the perfect weapon to destroy a nation. So there is no substitute for civic awareness and social prevention to prevent drug addiction. And for this, families, society, educational institutions and religious institutions have to play an effective role.
