Face-negotiation theory:
At the point when you have a self-introduction on the planet that you’d prefer to keep up, called face and others have the equivalent. At the point when we communicate with one another, others try not to insult your mental self portrait/face and you do likewise for them. At the point when we are in clash, this is on the grounds that one of us has insulted the other’s face. As we attempt to determine the contention, we take part in activities that attempt to fix the offense. There are different uses of face a lot of work outside of contention. All societies have an idea of “face” however face-work changes across societies. The cover making project assist us with understanding our emotions, convictions and qualities by expanding my inside mindfulness. It additionally assists us with seeing how our words and activities sway others.
Mask theme:
Theme of my mask is based on child marriage. I have been very much aware of this situation for the past 7-8 months and it has been bothering me alot. During the lockdown of 2020 the news of small girls getting married to older men increased vastly and found myself finding this particular news on each kind of multimedia such as tv, newspaper, radio and lastly the internet.
My message:
My message is stop child marriage. I wanted to put a voice out for the people who are vulnerable to these harshfull scenarios and showcase the brief difficulties faced by them. Lately this situation has increased vastly in remote areas of Bangladesh. This is due to the pandemic of covid-19. The outbreak of the virus has caused many families in disarray. Many problems have occurred after the government has announced the lockdown.A lot of people have lost their jobs, small businesses were going bankrupt, street vendors were not able to sell any products. Since the majority of the people were poor they had to depend on daily wages which they were unable to make and most of them had a family to feed that consisted of at least 4-5 people. Out of these 4-5 people most of them are childrens. Half of these children were girls who were mostly affected.Since the school was kept shut down, small girls spent most of their time at home. Families with poor backgrounds were finding difficulty to keep up with the day to day lifestyle due their financial limitations. Since these families of these children belong to remote places and their views and perspectives are very different from a normal person, they see their children, especially daughters, as a burden. Girls in these societies are mostly vulnerable and given less freedom than boys. In this tough situation as the pandemic families decide to marry off their
daughter so they can feel a sense of relief. These girls are aged from 6-14 years old and are married to older men. These girls are very young and have no single clue on what’s going on and are very much unable to raise their voice.
I have chosen this topic because our faculty wanted us to do a project which is related to motivated reasoning. Motivated reasoning is basically a reasoning that utilizes inwardly one-sided thinking to deliver reasons or settle on choices that are most wanted instead of those that precisely mirror the logical proof. This topic has many ways for the guardian to do this kind of filthy act. They feel that their young daughters are a burden to their family so they marry them off to get a sense of relief. Another reason is society pressure. Many people say many things which are mostly negative to a family who is raising a young girl. These people living in these types of remote societies believe that when a girl is at her young age she may go on to have a relationship with many men or they can become pregnant before marriage which will bring disgrace to the family. So to prevent this fear from happening they quickly get them married. Lastly, families are motivated due to poverty.
Layout:
Our plan was very plain and simple. We made a mask out of plaster using our own face. We applied two-three layers of plaster so the mask could be hard and left it to dry for a day. After the mask mold was made, we placed it on a thermocol board with the help of super glue. Then on the mask we painted two scenarios of a small girl , one side of the face shows the girl is happy and is wearing a school uniform and the other side shows the girl is crying and is sad while wearing a bride’s outfit. The background behind the mask is blue which indicates freedom. Beside both sides of the mask I wrote a few messages on each side. The messages are things she wants and the things she doesn’t want.
Painting and Installation:
I painted my mask using acrylic paint with the help of different brushes. I used many different colors such as red for the lips and bride’s outfit, blue pigment for the background and for the tears, black pigment for the hair and many more colors so it can look eye-catching and beautiful. For my Project I did not use any kind of printed image or any objects and everything was done handmade. I did find myself having a tough time mixing the colors for the skin. Sometimes it was getting darker and sometimes lighter. Mixed many colors such as orange and white, red and white but finally I mixed brown and white to get my desired color for the skin.
Realization:
After I completed painting and later submitting my mask I realized that I should have painted my mask’s eyes shut instead of keeping it wide open. Another thing I noticed was that the shape of my mask was bigger than usual, this is because I had applied not one but 2-3 layers so the mask can be strong and hold its position instead of flattening which happened quite a few times for me.
Strength of our project was that it was unique and explained the topic very easily and clearly. Secondly the mask is very attractive due its artistic paint work which was done by myself.
Next time if i make the mask i would reduce the thickness of the mask. I would focus more on the small details of the masks such as color and drawings. My thought on this project is that it helped me develop different skills and it also helped me gain more knowledge about the topic very deeply.
Role of individual members:
My Group consisted of me; Amit Baidya and Ashiqur Rahman. My group member Ashik bought all the necessary items needed to make the mask. His face was used to make the mask. He also helped in painting the mask, especially the background. Lastly he researched about the topic and provided us with important information. My job was to make the mask by applying the plaster of paris on my team member’s face. I also shaped the mask and gave a detailed paint job. Finally I took the photograph of our mask and submitted it to our faculty google drive.
Conclusion:
This project helped us to gain knowledge about how people think in different situations in different areas and have different perspectives which opened my mind to a whole new dimension. I have developed a new skill of making masks out of plaster of paris which i never used in my life before. I am looking forward to making sculptures with the help of this skill.
Learning: I had a great time working on this project. Especially enjoyed the mask making task. After this project I have learned that we can communicate with people through mask making techniques. Also I realized that using visual expression can convey powerful messages.
