Project-14
Course Code and Name: MSJ 3253 Data Journalism
Project Name: Data Story
Project Date: Summer 2023
Project Description: For this project I had to make a data story in our own topic. Where I had to collect data from various sources and clean them for a story.
Project Justification: This was an interesting project. For this project I chose to make a story about the Bangladesh cricket team’s performance over the last few years. Where I collected data from various sources and removed unnecessary data from there. For this project I used various tools such as table capture, Ms excel, Flourish and Data Wrapper.

What is Data Journalism and it’s potential and limits
The technique of gathering, analysing, and presenting data to create stories and reveal insights is known as data journalism. By employing data as the main source for storytelling, it goes above and beyond conventional reporting. Data journalism has the ability to provide news stories additional context and depth, which would help the public better understand complicated subjects. It enables reporters to see patterns, trends, and linkages that might not be readily apparent using traditional reporting techniques. Moreover, by enabling individuals to base their judgements on the facts supplied, data journalism may promote openness and accountability.
However, data journalism does have its limitations. It is very dependent on the quality and quantity of data, which is not always complete or correct. Data might be inaccurate, stale, or even purposefully changed. Journalists must use caution when choosing their data sources and make sure that the processes they employ to analyze the data are transparent.
Origin of Data Journalism
Data journalism has been around for a while, but it has become increasingly well-known with the development of digital technologies and the internet. One of the earliest types of data journalism was computer-assisted reporting (CAR), in which reporters utilised databases and spreadsheets to analyse data. Technology improvements, data availability, and the demand for more in-depth, fact-based reporting are today’s driving forces behind data journalism.
Source Of Data
In Bangladesh Journalists use a variety of sources for collecting data. For instance, the Government gave lots or reports on many occasions. Different ministries published different statistics, data, and reports. Journalists can analyze them and use those data for their reports. There are lots of NGOs in Bangladesh who are working on social issues and development. They published lots of data and that data could be a source for journalists. Information from institutions like the World Bank, the United Nations, and other international entities may offer important insights into economics, development, and international relations.Information gathered via research studies and surveys carried out by academic institutions and research organisations.Information from websites, online forums, and social media platforms can provide insights into trends and public opinion.Governments and organizations are increasingly adopting open data policies, making statistics available to the public for journalists and academics.
Ethical challenges data journalists face
Data Journalists face a number of ethical challenges, firstly accuracy, it’s important for data journalists to take care to use correct data. The narrative will be erroneous if the data is not correct. Secondly, data journalists must take care to keep their reporting free of prejudice. They must do it in a fair and balanced way. Lastly, it is important for data journalists to take care to respect the privacy of the people whose data they utilise. Only publicly accessible or anonymised data may be employed by them.
By adhering to the best practices for ethical data journalism, data journalists may overcome these difficulties.
Data journalists should be open and honest about their methods and data sources. They should describe the data collection and analysis processes they used. Data journalists need to give the data they utilise context. They ought to explain the significance of the data and what it signifies. Data journalists should be accountable for the information they utilize. They shouldn’t make use of information that is incorrect or that endangers others.
Understanding about mathematics
Data journalists must have an understanding about mathematics. Otherwise it could be difficult to do any data report. As fundamental tools for data analysis, mathematics and statistics are a must for data journalists. Data journalists can benefit from the understanding, pattern recognition, and conclusion-drawing capabilities of mathematics and statistics.
For instance, data journalists can compute averages, medians, and standard deviations using mathematics. To check for statistical significance, they can employ statistics. They can create predictive models of future behaviour using statistics as well.
For data journalists to provide accurate and educational articles, they must have a basic grasp of mathematics and statistics.
